Trouble T Roy, born Yusef Hawkins, was a 16-year-old African American teenager from Brooklyn, New York, who was shot and killed on August 23, 1989. Hawkins and his friends had gone to the predominantly white neighborhood of Bensonhurst to look at a used car that was for sale. As they were leaving, they were confronted by a group of white youths, one of whom, Joseph Fama, shot and killed Hawkins.
The murder of Trouble T Roy sparked outrage and highlighted racial tensions in New York City at the time. Fama was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 32 years to life in prison. The case also led to the formation of the Citywide Coalition Against Bias and Racism, which sought to address issues of racial discrimination in the city.
Trouble T Roy's death served as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in America, and he is remembered as a victim of senseless violence and racism.
